VIP Sikorsky S-92 helicopter gets full interior makeover from Starling

Based near London Gatwick Airport, specialist aircraft interior refurbishment provider, Starling Aerospace, was commissioned by a maintenance and repair organisation (MRO) whose client wanted their privately owned Sikorsky S-92 VIP helicopter to receive a completely upgraded interior, to include the cockpit. The project also involved the upgrading of the aircraft’s 18 seats to 16G standard, which brought a range of challenges around certification compliance that Starling Aerospace had the technical expertise and experience to accomplish.

Coralie Wigg, company director and co-owner at Starling Aerospace, who oversaw the complex assignment, said that every aircraft interior upgrade project begins from a compliance and regulatory perspective, so that the customer’s desired objectives can meet the necessary regulations. “It’s not just a question of changing the foam on the seats,” said Coralie.

Starling Aerospace was the first UK aerospace company to operate a 3-in-1 CNC perforating, stitching and embroidery combined machine, which was used to create a bespoke, intricate diamond-stiching pattern for the new seat covers on the S-92. The client wanted the aircraft to be similar to the interior of a high-end car.

In order to achieve the unique looking interior, Starling had to acquire the leathers that were the same as the original tannery, which was the most expedient way in which to certify it, both time- and cost-wise.

Once all the necessary elements had been produced at Starling’s facility, all items were shipped to the MRO, where Starling’s expert team of fitters assisted in the re-fitting of the aircraft.
